A cleaner was charged with obstructing police officers during the police-citizen conflict on 5 August 2019. He was accused of spreading his arms to stop an officer from arresting a teenager who was chanting slogans.
Magistrate Wong Kwok-fai suggested this was a serious offence, but the Community Service Orders is severe as well, with the defendant sentenced to 160 hours of community service.
The defendant’s counsel pointed out that the defendant was willing to cooperate, and as a grass-root, it will be punishing the defendant by his contribution to society without pay.
After being released, the defendant, Ho, thanked the citizens who went to support him. He raised the 5+1 hand gesture to show his support for the pro-democracy “five demands”, and encouraged the public to never give up.
