The Great Firewall of China (GFW) is the combination of legislative actions and technologies enforced to regulate the Internet domestically. Its role in Internet censorship in China is to block access to selected foreign websites, to prevent the world to know the truth in China, and slow down cross-border internet traffic. Most of the well-known websites are blocked by GFW, including Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Wikipedia, to name a few, by means of limiting access to foreign information sources, blocking foreign internet tools, or requiring foreign companies to adapt to China’s regulations.
The Great Firewall of China has played a significant role in the Chinese Communist Party’s ambition to control the country and the world.
The GFW is a way of mentally isolating the Chinese people from the world, which resembles the Berlin Wall established in 1961 in Germany. The GFW makes it easier for CCP to control people’s minds, through which they can determine what news the Chinese people read daily, what websites/softwares/apps they access, or how they communicate with others. It is the very reason that most Chinese people nowadays accept similar views and live similar lifestyles.
The generation Z in China, who grew up under the effect of GFW and speech censorship, formed a strong sense of obedience and would accept things as they are – in sharp contrast with the young people in Hong Kong, who are fighting at the frontline against the suppression by the CCP governance today. According to a report by ABC.net, many Chinese teenagers surveyed support the GFW. They believe the firewall protects them from the erosion of terrorism and extremism, and it plays a protective role in preventing hacker activities.
Therefore, as where the coronavirus originated is abundantly clear, most Chinese netizens still firmly believe that the virus has originated from people consuming the wet market products obtained from Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan. They also once launched a cyber-attack towards the U.S., as a widely circulating article charged that the virus was made in the U.S. Overthrowing of the firewall can inherently break the unification of fake news source controlled by CCP, diversify speech and opinions, and gradually change the distorted and false world views of the Chinese people. Eventually, it will threaten CCP’s dictatorship in China then take down CCP.
Overthrowing the GFW will also generate immeasurable commercial value to the world. For example, in the first quarter alone, Baidu, the search engine monopoly in China, generated revenue of RMB 22.5 billion ($ 3.2 billion) and net profit of RMB 3.1 billion ($ 400 million); iQIYI, one of the major video platforms in China, generated revenue of RMB 7.6 billion yuan ($ 1.08 billion), and this is just one of the top video platforms in China. It is conceivable that if YouTube or Google enters China, how much revenue would flood into their accounts. The market of 1.4 billion Chinese people is of strategic importance if it is open to worldwide competitors fairly. As is mentioned in Mr. Miles Guo’s July 4th live video, tearing down the GFW will generate several trillion dollars in profits in no time and the stock market will rise without any doubt. By comparison, the benefits of implementing the Sino-US trade agreement are negligible, let alone it takes several years to implement the agreement fully if CCP has suddenly changed its behavior to honor the agreement instead of playing another trick against US.
Taking down the GFW is imminent, an irresistible trend, and of strategic interest. The Starlink Project provides technical possibilities for overthrowing the GFW. We vision that soon, the GFW will be taken down and CCP be eradicated from the world, a malignant tumor that threatens the rule of law, freedom, and democracy.
