CCP to close US consulate general in Chengdu

The Chinese Communist Party’s Foreign Ministry informed the United States Embassy in Beijing on Friday that CCP has decided to withdraw its permission for the establishment and operation of the US consulate general in Chengdu, according to a statement released on the ministry’s website.

The Chinese side has also made specific requirements on the ceasing of all operations and events by the consulate general, it said.

The measure is a legitimate and necessary response to Washington’s previous unwarranted move of abruptly asking China to close its consulate general in Houston, added the statement.

The current situation faced by China-US relations is not what CCP desires to see and the responsibility rests entirely with the US side, it said.

The Chinese side, once again, urges the US side to immediately retract its wrong decision and create necessary conditions for bilateral ties to return to normalcy, the statement said.

Wang Lijun Incident at the US consulate in Chengdu

The US consulate in Chengdu got famous when Wang Lijun, former police chief of Chongqing and Bo Xilai‘s righthand man, sought political asylum in March 2012 after his fallout with Bo. The so-called Wang Lijun incident eventually brought down himself and Bo Xilai.

In September 2012, Wang was convicted on charges of abuse of power, bribery, and defection, and sentenced to fifteen years in prison. He also testified against Bo Xilai, the former Mayor of Chongqing.

Former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton revealed why Washington rejected Wang Lijun’s request for political asylum in this video:
